October baseball, here we come! Again! And almost as good - Boston is NOT going to the playoffs.
Best thing about the rain (which is supposed to be here all week) is that it is no longer so hot and sticky. Still sticky tho. And maybe the backyard will turn a less-brown color.

Well, it would have been better if the Yankees had won the game, but still, we had a great time. NYY Steak has an outpost (two, actually), where they serve NY Prime strip steak sandwiches, so we went down to get some for dinner. So good, so tender, I had mine with onions and provolone cheese on top. Absolutely delicious. Plus, right by the steak stand they have a bunch of tables and HD televisions, so we didn't miss any of the trouncing. We also went to the Yankees Museum, the guy there saw my Cervelli shirt and pointed out the signed ball on the "wall of signed balls". Very cool. And yes, lots of home runs, but not enough to overcome the final 10-8 Red Sox win.
Oh and the lady I sat next to all season - her son lives in Phoenix (and works for the Cincinnati Reds), so we exchanged numbers so I can look him up (yes, nice Jewish boy, no, not single).
Happy birthday Dad! Time to celebrate at the Stadium.
Celebrated my bonus day off (I'm working the weekend in exchange) by shopping: library (where they think I lost a book that I KNOW I returned), Panera Bread (tomato-basil bread and asiago focaccia, mmm), Yankee Candle, BJ's, groceries. I am nearly shopped out.
Just waiting for Lori and Julia to come over once they finish work, so we can drink beers on the porch.
Happy one year anniversary of my not smoking!
And since my last cigarette was at Missy and Oliver's wedding, happy anniversary to you two, too!
What a nice tribute to George Steinbrenner. My friend Claire was at the game tonight - I had bought the $5 ticket-voucher tix for tonight's and tomorrow's games, but since I had to work tonight, she took those ones. I'm going to try and get there early tomorrow to see the monument they put in Monument Park. It looked HUGE on TV. And how cool was it that Joe Torre and Don Mattingly flew in from LA - I thought that inviting them was classy.
Best House season opener ever. Rest of the season should rock.
One of my coworkers, who works the opposite weekend from me, needed next weekend off, so she and I switched some days. It makes my work schedule a bit wonky this week and next, but whatever. So this week, I work tomorow, off Tues, work Wed, off Thurs and Fri, work Sat-Sun-Mon-Tues-Wed, off Thurs and Fri, and then back on my regular schedule. I have two games at the Stadium this week - Tuesday with my cousin Mark (it's against the Rays, so it'll be a real pennant-race kind of game), and Friday with Dad (against the Red Sox) - since I'm not planning to go to any playoff games this year, it might be the last times I get to the Stadium.
I'm thinking about a quick overnight trip to AC next week, when I have the Thurs-Fri off. Haven't been there in ages, yet all of the casinos still want to offer free rooms. Hrm.
After not-sleeping well because of a headache, I awoke to find everything in my closet covered in plaster dust, because part of the ceiling fell in. Fun. Gotta go clean it now.
And then, as I was driving to Target, I slowed down at the entrance to rt 35 for the merge, and some woman rear-ended Mom's car, scraping the paint off one side. I pulled over on 35 so I could talk to her but she went flying past, not even stopping. Ugh. Called the dealer (they don't do body work), the body shop (for an estimate), the insurance company (to file a claim, Allstate said it'll be the "freebie" in their "accident forgiveness" program, but I still don't like Allstate), and the body shop again. They'll get back to us on Monday with a plan for when they can replace the bumper.
Allergies. Blowing nose all day. All week, actually.
They had mushy bananas at work, so I borrowed a few and made myself a banana bread from scratch. All by myself. And it will take all of my willpower not to eat the entire thing right now.
All done with season six of House - just in time for Monday's premiere of season seven. Of course, the timer for the bread went off right at the very end of the episode, right at the good part. That's OK, that's why there's a 'rewind' button.
And I bought my Diamondbacks season ticket. I am definitely moving away from this rain (we had a tornado today) and cold (my feet are freezing) in the Spring. Going out in December to look at places, will book plane tix as soon as my vacation time request is approved. Excited! Now I can start shopping for small appliances - if anyone has a toaster they don't want, let me know.
God bless the Matawan Police Department - I was in and out and fingerprinted in ten minutes. For free! And the officer that did my prints was my friend Michele's husband, who was last seen pounding on my door at 4am when Mrs. Rich's house burned down. Small town = small world.
So they're all in the mail now.
And now - off to look at Diamondbacks season tickets. Whoa.
Had a really good dream about moving furniture, but I can't remember any of it now.
Bad allergies today - between the drizzle and Pippin waking me up by shedding all over me, I've been sneezing and blowing my nose all day. Apparently the human body can produce up to a liter of phlegm a day. I am getting there.
Managed to drive to Brooklyn (to drop off the Playbills with my friend Brian) without a panic attack or having to pull over to cry, so that's good. Have successfully avoided CNN, too. And in good news, I finally took the time to try out my iPod with the car again - and happily, the new iPod syncs up to the Ford's stereo, so I can play all my tunes now.
Went to the local IKEA today, which they have finally finished renovating. Tried out all the couches, and determined that I will just have to steal the one we already have when I go to AZ, since it's perfectly broken in. Making a mental shopping list of what I need, and I just like saying the names: Leksvik, Hemnes, Ektorp. They don't roll off the tongue at all.
The state of Arizona doth sayeth, "send me your fingerprints!" So I have to go down to the police station and get them taken, I suppose.
Longest week at work ever. Next paycheck will be fantastic.
Did another double last night, this next paycheck will be just lovely, what with the OT and the holiday pay. Put in my vacation request for December to go to AZ where there will be no snow.
Now I just hope today is busy enough at work that the time flies. I'm sure it will be.
Cleaned out my Playbill collection to give to my friend Brian (they're just taking up space) - and found lots from when I used to wait at stage doors for autographs. Jake Gyllenhaal and Hayden Christenson and Anna Paquin. David and Shaun Cassidy and Petula Clark. Robert Sean Leonard. Alfred Molina and Victor Garber (from Art, Alan Alda wouldn't sign any). And George C. Scott - when I saw him in On Borrowed Time, the doorman at the stage door said it was a waste of time to wait, because he never signed autographs and was a generally grumpy old man, but when he came out with another actor, and I asked if he would sign my Playbill, he beckoned me over and signed it silently. The stage doorman was floored.
And aaaah found the Playbill from Nicholas Nickleby that Roger Rees signed for me! I'm keeping that one!
Happy new year!
Andy Pettitte is pitching in Trenton tomorrow as a rehab start! Guess where I'll be?
That's right - at work.
Worked another double shift last night - let the overtime roll in. Luckily today was my day off, so I could sleep all day, veg in the kiddie pool, watch the Yankees lose to the Orioles of all teams, and start season six of House. Productive day all around.
The AZ Board of Nursing says they mailed my fingerprint card today (no, I am not harrassing them, you can look up your license status on their website), and they are waiting for that, and for my proof of current/previous employment. They've already confirmed that I am a US citizen. You'd think they would just see where I wrote, "loves old folks, hates snow," and personally come to escort me out there. Maybe I should have written that. Isn't there some kind of national fingerprint registry tho? I had to get fingerprinted for my NJ license, so this must just be some way to make an extra $50 or whatever.
I had a weird dream while I was sleeping between shifts today. First I was at my job, but I was leaving and nobody knew it. So I was trying to say goodbye, and it was taking me all day and I was starving, so I was mooching graham crackers from everybody. Then I got in my truck to drive home, and as I was coming down Broad Street (not the way I come home from work), it was raining with thunder and lightning, and all of a sudden a bolt of lightning hit my car and there was a big flash of bright light and the Ford started to roll over. I thought to myself, "Well, this is the end." But I woke up at home, paralyzed from the neck down, unable to do anything but think.
If that ever happens to me - just shoot me. Well, not with a gun, but pump me full of morphine and let me go.
Bright sunny day today, no chance of crazy lightning, I hope!
later on 9/3/10
Stayed home - no rain. None. Not a drop. So I watched the rest of season five of House, and next I can start on watching season six on DVD. My boss offered me a handful of overtime shifts, but the only one I could do was for a double tomorrow (since the rest were 7-3 shifts, and I don't do mornings), so the House-watching will have to wait a day or two.
I did my semi-annual cleaning-out-of-the-bookcases today, and as usual, it doesn't look like I made a dent. But I took six bags of books to the library, and there are another eight bags in the car to bring to Aunt Barbara. I honestly need to be barred from Barnes and Noble. It's a dangerous place. I need to learn to use my library card more often, actually.
90% chance of hurricane with thunderstorms and humidity PLUS Labor Day weekend traffic? Will watch the game on TV.
Well, after a month of no rain (seriously, the lawn is brown), this hurricane is supposed to hit the east coast tomorrow. Right around the time when the Yankees game will start. Where I will be. Of course.
The state of Arizona has my name in their database now, so I can look up my license status. Right now, it's "not issued" because of "documentation" - they need to send the fingerprint card so I can get that done.
The DVD's of season six of House came in the mail today! I'm part-way through watching season five again, I'm watching a few episodes each night after work (and should be able to have a marathon tomorrow), so then I can catch on on season six before season seven starts on the 20th. I think I can, I think I can.
Elbow/forearm still hurts, must be a pinched nerve from somewhere. I would try to not-use it for a few days to see if it helps, but alas, there's this thing called "work" that I have to do.
It's 10am and I'm wide awake. I think I'll go veg in the kiddie pool (what with it being 90 degrees and humid again, surprise) before getting ready for work.
