Rain!

My high school friend Marc is dealing with a host of health issues, and is doing a lot of "bucket list" traveling this summer. High on his list was a Route 66 roadtrip across Arizona, Texas, and Colorado. We met up last night to hang out at the Diamondbacks game, and had a great time catching up. I can't believe it's been 25 years since we graduated. We're just as cool as we were back in 1992, which isn't saying much. I'm really looking forward to seeing his roadtrip pics.

So tired! Yesterday was a long day at the adoption event, but in the end, we fond homes for 25 dogs and 35 cats&kittens! It felt amazing to see people fall in love with their new pets, and it was great to tell the stories of our foster cats. We usually don't get to meet the new cat parents, so this was really special.

Eve and I did some food foraging today - drove down to check out some wholesale food places. So if I ever need 40 gallons of lard, or 100 hotdogs, I know where to go! But even better than looking at restaurant-quantities of onions and potatoes, we wound up at the fantastic dim sum place. Heavenly. We noshed on dumplings and shrimp and I fell into the biggest food coma ever.

So one of the kitties I'm fostering came to me very pregnant (the woman who had been feeding her outside wasn't able to keep her fulltime, and wanted to get her out of the heat). She had her babies a week ago - so I'm a grandma! Sheila (I had to name her that, she and Claude were snuggling, and it sounded right) is such a good cat-mama, and I'm glad she's nursing them so well. There are five little ones, and their eyes are just starting to open.

BARK was selected as one of ten rescues in Maricopa County to participate in a "clear the shelters" day sponsored by PetSmart and Bissell Pet Vacuums. So on the 22nd, all the adoption fees at the Avondale PetSmart will be waived. We're going to bring a bunch of kitties from foster care and from our other locations, in the hopes that we can find homes for them. We are - of course - overwhelmed with kitties. I've got another bunch getting fixed on Tuesday and I think on Friday, so it'll be a busy week.

Never thought I would say this, but I hope it rains. It's (slightly) humid and monsoon-y out there, and it'll feel so good to have a downpour. Back east, it rained for days and days on end, but the rain out here comes in big downbursts like thunderstorms, and it's so cool to watch.

Hey, I had another birthday last week. Funny how that happens every year about this time.

Fourth of July - I'm glad I'm off from work today, was up late trapping kitties (what else). The foster kittens that I have, along with a bunch of others that BARK has in foster care, are getting fixed tomorrow and will be ready for adoption this weekend. I really love doing this. I wish I had started doing rescue work years ago, I really get a good feeling from it.

I'm watching Jaws, to remind myself how much I a) hate the ocean and b) love Richard Dreyfuss. Later on will be the annual viewing of 1776, as sort of a reassurance that the government has always been a mess. Even tho you know how it ends, you don't think they'll actually get the Declaration signed.
