I picked up a last-minute overtime shift last night, that'll help the next paycheck.

The West Valley finally got some rain today. It started around 4am with this huge crack of thunder (that I swear woke up all my residents) and kept raining most of the morning. It was pouring during my drive home, so I put off stopping at the grocery store. Will go tomorrow when I go to get my nails done.

And we jumped out of a perfectly good airplane! Today was the only day where my schedule and Irene's schedule aligned, so we went down to Casa Grande (about 45 min south of Phoenix) and did the skydive. I thought it was less scary and more fun than the first one, and our instructors were pretty awesome. It was also nice to just be on our own instead of with a group of 40 like the last time, because we didn't have to wait around all day for our entire group. We really had a good time.

I can't believe it's the All Star break already. After the craptacular night at work last night, I'm so tempted to be sick and stay in and watch the ASG tonight. Or then again, I could tape it and watch it tomorrow. Will see how I feel later.

I need to get to Vegas and finish placing my bets for the World Series - I realized that I only put down bets on National League games! Gotta even that out with some American League teams. Maybe Thursday/Friday.

Thirteen years ago (almost to the day), I jumped out of a perfectly good airplane. Irene (who now lives here) and Jackie Stolte and I went up in the first flight of the day. This past year, Jackie's been dealing with mucosal melanoma, a form of cancer. And in shitty news, her doctors told her two weeks ago that there's nothing more they can do. She's chosen hospice care. In honor of her strength and humor and bravery in facing her fears head-on, Irene and I are going to jump out of another perfectly good airplane. Date TBD, but soon.

And Derek Jeter is out again with a strained quad. Bleh.

7/11/13
Derek Jeter is back - hallelujah.

Today's plan: watch the Yankees game, go get my nails done, watch the summer's most entertaining blockbuster: Sharknado. Seriously. Tornado full of sharks. I can't wait.

Yaaaaawwwwwn.

It's humid here, which means rain is coming. And hopefully the rain will make the humidity go away.

So I got my DEXA scan results, finally. When I went last week to get the results, I waited for an hour before getting fed up and going out to the receptionist. Who told me that the doctor had just gotten there and was starting to see patients. They got an earful from me about scheduling appointments when the doc isn't even in the office. So I went back today to see the PA. My bone density in my spine is OK, but in my hip, it's lousy (those are the two areas they x-ray in a bone scan). I've been on Depo Provera for birth control for the past eight years, and it leeches calcium from your bones. It can improve, but I have to stop the Depo. Since I don't want kids, I'm thinking of just doing the permanent thing, probably with Essure. Best thing about the Depo tho (apart from the obvious) was that I didn't get my period while I was on it. With the Essure, I'd probably start getting it again. Small price to pay, I say. Beats a broken hip.

Anyway, going to look at my options and make up my mind this week or next.

Sad news for today - Michelle and Sean are moving (with baby Julian) to North Carolina, where her parents are. I totally understand why, but still, I'll miss them. Michelle was the only person I knew in Phoenix when I moved out here, and she and Sean were so great in helping me get settled.

So many groups are fund-raising for the families of the firefighters. I made a donation to the Arizona Humane Society, who went in over last weekend to rescue animals that had to be left behind. It was a horrible feeling when we had to leave Mimi and Pixel behind on 9/11 (and such a wonderful feeling to find them alive and well on 9/13 when we went back downtown on that long, long day).

7/3/13
So Mom and I had a great week while she was here.

We went to Vegas to meet up with Pete and Corrie for fantastic birthday dinner and Ka (jeez, did you see that one of the acrobats was killed on Sat during the show? First fatality during the 30 years of Cirque du Soleil), and some winning at blackjack. And then we drove home via Prescott and the incredibly scenic route 89 (where there is now a giant wildfire that killed 19 firefighters). I was hoping to find a swimming hole up there, but it turns out you can't swim in either lake in Prescott, and the supposed "creek" at the bottom of a windy dirt road was non-existant.

And Friday-Saturday we went down to Tucson - had lunch with Mom's cousin Marie and dinner with our friends Jolene and Rodney. We toured the Titan Missile Museum and the Pima Air Space Museum, and went to the Mission San Xavier del Bac. I left my bathing suit at the hotel by accident, but when I called, they had found it and Jolene was kind enough to pick it up and mail it to me.

I did some searching online and found a cute-looking place along Oak Creek (an actual creek) just north of Sedona, at a surprisingly affordable price, so I booked two nights there for the end of the month. I hope it's as cozy as it looks, because I'm looking for a "getaway" place.

Mimi is skin and bones, I'm snuggling her as often as I can (and as often as she'll let me) and giving her all the tuna she wants. She still purrs so loudly and has her personality, and is eating, drinking, peeing and pooping OK, so it's not critical, but I know the end is near. She'll be 17 in September, I hope we make it.

7/1/13
I had a great time with Mom last week. And because of a staffing issue, I ended up going in to work last night after I took her to the airport, for a few hours. So I'm still catching up on my sleep/work schedule, and will recap the week tomorrow. Or Wednesday.

My heart goes out to the families of the nineteen firefighters who died in the fire up in Yarnell. We had just driven through there on Thursday.

And sad, too, that an acrobat in Ka fell to her death on Sat. We were there on Tuesday.
