For my new job, I had to get a Fingerprint Clearance Card, which is provided by the Department of Public Safety. I got fingerprinted in 2010 when I applied for my AZ nursing license, but apparently the Board of Nursing and DPS don't speak to each other, so I had to do it all over again. Since each of the local police departments only do fingerprinting on a single day of the week, I had to go over to Avondale to get my prints done. And then back downtown to DPS to drop off the application, fingerprint card, and bank check for $67. And in 4-6 weeks they'll send me a card that says what I already know: that my prints haven't changed in 40 years and I still haven't committed a felony.

But I did discover that Arizona Highways (of the awesome magazine and TV show) has a gift shop right there next to the DPS HQ. So I stopped in and did some shopping.

And even better! This week starts "Girl Scout Cookie" season here in Phoenix. They set up kiosks at local stores, and today I supported my local troop by buying enough Peanut Butter Patties to get me through the rest of this long, cold, winter.

Oddly enough, I survived the weekend! I went to bed at like 7pm Friday night, so I could get up and leave by 5am on Saturday. The weekend was busy enough that the time flew by, and the nurses and aides seemed really happy that I was there to support them. Always nice to get positive feedback. Irene let me crash at her place Sat night, she's only 10-15 minutes from work instead of the 45-55 minutes it would take to get back to my house.

My plan for today was to go get my fingerprints done, but I managed to sleep all day instead.

The cats missed me. Marvin celebrated my return by trying to chew my arm off.

I went to see Ain't Misbehavin' at Phoenix Theatre last night. Love this show. I worked on a production when I was at Montclair, oh, twenty years ago, and have loved the music ever since. Totally enjoyed it. And then I went back to work to clean out the med carts (a truly daunting task, which I shall re-peat monthly). Tomorrow I start my double-weekend shift, 6a-10p on Sat and Sun.

The hardest part of orientation today was (as usual) being there at 6:30am. But I made it, and survived eight hours on my feet with the wound nurse. Not bad at all. I'm so glad to be working with the DON and ADON, both of whom I worked with in Peoria. It's a good bunch all around. I also sat in on the morning meeting, which will not be a regular occurance, since I'll be there on the weekends, but the administrator said to feel free to sit in anytime I'm there during the week. Tomorrow I need to get my fingerprints done, and then go back over to Scottsdale for a meeting about "documentation from a legal standpoint," and then go through the wound care orders so I feel comfortable taking over on the weekends (that'll be part of my job), and then start tackling tasks like cleaning out the IV room and the med carts. It'll probably be a long day/eve. Thurs I have to go in for the monthly staff meeting. Gonna rack up some mileage this week!

Good thing about being there in the daytime is that it's so busy that the time just flies by. The ADON and I are sharing an office, so I went out to get some snacks to keep there. I was trying to find a clock at Target, and couldn't find one! No clocks! Annoying, but I'll keep looking.

I understand the east coast is getting slammed with snow again. It was 86 today. No snow. That's why I'm here.

I meant to go and get a bank check for my fingerprint card, and get my actual fingerprints done, but happy MLK day! Everything is closed. I'll have to go on Wednesday. Tomorrow I'm orienting on wound rounds at the new job. Last night was my last fulltime night at current job. I'm going to stay on "as needed," which means I should be able to pick up a shift or two a week, after I get through this week of orientation for the new place.

Marvin is doing just great. I had isolated him in the guest room, and he figured out how to open the door handle and escape. I have a genius little kitty.

One of the things I miss about New York is going to see theatre stuff at the drop of a hat. However, we do get some cool things out here - one of them being Stokes doing a concert in Scottsdale (right near new job!). I put in some hours yesterday, and then went to see Stokes, from the third row. Amazing. I could not have asked for a better night out.

It's been a busy week. I took Marvin yesterday to get his neuter/declaw surgery, and he came through just fine. They kept him overnight, so I picked him up this afternoon. He's cranky about the E-Collar, but otherwise OK. I have him living in the guest room for now so he can use his special non-clumping litter and stay away from the ladies for a few days.

Today was my orientation day at the new (weekend) job. I'm also going in on Friday to work with the Admissions lady, and then on Tuesday for wound rounds and Wednesday to get some time on the floor. Then next weekend I'll start fulltime on the weekends. Gonna see how the 16-hour days work out (and if they don't, I'll switch to doing three 12-hour shifts or something). Irene has graciously offered to let me crash at her place between long shifts, and I have graciously accepted since she lives a lot closer!

1/6/14
I've accepted the other job offer. I've changed over to PRN (as needed) at my current job, with two weeks to notice to finish out my fulltime hours. And starting after the 20th, I'll be working double weekends (6a-2p, 2p-10p) as the weekend nurse manager at a faciity in Scottsdale, where the rest of the nursing management came from my first AZ job. Very excited to join them. Not so excited about the drive-to-Scottsdale every weekend part! But I'll only be working two days a week, with the option to pick up PRN shifts there or at my current job. And working those two days, which is a nice, fulltime, 32 hours, will pay my bills, because I'm getting a raise from what I make now. Since there's only an eight-hour turnaround between shifts, and Scottsdale is 45 min away, I'll either be grabbing a room at the Hampton Inn there, or bringing my sleeping bag to work with me.

1/5/14
I'm irritated about several things with the new job. Mainly, not hearing anything about my health insurance. I wrote to HR and said that if I don't have answers by Wednesday, she can expect to see me on Thursday in the office.

I've got a job offer from another facility in my pocket, so I'm not stressed.

1/3/14
Marvin has managed to leap onto the laptop (not new) and dislodge a handful of keys. I can't get the 'z' back on. Hopefully I won't have to use it that much. Eleven more days til the great snipping - the the hopeful calming down of the kitten.

Busy day today. I took Irene to her foot doctor appt (she's on crutches with a walking cast, so she can't drive), and then we went to lunch downtown at Copper Blues (home of fantastic cocktails and sandwiches, as well as a 50% off Groupon) and then to Scottsdale (me for a quick LUSH store trip, her for her eyebrow lady). After all that running around, I'm ready for a nice, long nap.

While the Northeast was getting blanketed in snow, we enjoyed a balmy 77 degrees here today. I know, nobody likes me when I say that.

I don't think I mentioned the coolest holiday gift - Pete and Corrie are coming out for a week in February! I'm stoked, since neither of them have ever been to Arizona (oh, there's that pesky Z). Besides showing them my house and 'hood, we're going to go up to the Canyon and Monument Valley, and tool around town. Mom had sent them some salts and spices from this awesome store in Prescott, and Pete wants to go there, so that's on the agenda, too. They're also going back east for a week or so earlier in the month. February is vacation month!

Annoyed at HR because they don't seem to have my health insurance set up. I've sent two unanswered emails, and the next step is to show up at the HR office on my day off and ask in person what the deal is. Before I left my last job, I stocked up on my prescription meds, and I've got maybe a month left on the Paxil (the others are OK for a few more months) - unless I start cutting them in half. Or - heavens - get my insurance straightened out so I can go see my doc!

1/2/14
Happy New Year! I worked NYE, and slept all day yesterday. Literally. I fell into bed by 8am, woke up somewhere around midnight, and went right back to bed. May that be a sign that I'll get good sleep this year.
